Is a chopper a helicopter?

We have all heard about Helicopters, seen in Movies, maybe many of us have had Helicopter/ Chopper rides. We have also Heard about Choppers like the police Choppers Or Rescue Choppers and so on.  I always wondered Is Chopper and Helicopter are the same? Or is there any difference between at all?. So did a bit of research to figure that out... Here is what I discovered.

We have all heard about Helicopters, seen in Movies, maybe many of us have had Helicopter/ Chopper rides.

I always wondered Is Chopper and Helicopter are the same? Or is there any difference between at all?.

So did a bit of research to figure that out… Here is what I discovered.

Few definitions of Chopper and Helicopter

  1. The helicopter is used by the military for defence and war purposes while the chopper is widely used for corporate, medical, firefighting, police, para-public, oil & gas, etc. purposes.
  2. Chopper is basically the casual word for a type of helicopter and also Chopper comes with Limited functionality
  3. Although the word helicopter has been widely replaced by chopper but helicopter is still a formal word in business.
  4. The helicopter is used in clogged and isolated areas where fixed-wing aircraft like a chopper and many forms of vertical-takeoff-and-landing aircraft cannot operate.
  5. Most of the helicopters have more than one blades or rotors while choppers usually have one rotor or blade.

The English word helicopter is adapted from the French word hélicoptère, coined by Gustave Ponton d’Amécourt in 1861, which originates from the Greek helix (ἕλιξ) “helix, spiral, whirl, convolution” and pteron (πτερόν) “wing”. English language.

There are some nicknames/ Informal names  for helicopter that include “chopper”, “copter”, “helo”, “heli”, and “whirlybird”.

Some helicopters saw limited production, but it wasn’t until 1942 that Igor Sikorsky’s helicopter saw full-scale production, with 131 aircraft built.

Despite the fact that most early designs used more than one main rotor, the single main rotor with anti-torque tail rotor configuration has become the most common helicopter configuration. 

Tandem rotor helicopters are also popular due to their higher payload capacity.

Today, coaxial helicopters, tiltrotor aircraft, and compound helicopters are all in operation.

Yeah! There’s a little difference between the two! Helicoptor (Helicopter) is an aircraft having rotors for lift and thrust power, while choppers (Choppers) have limited capability.

The military employs helicopters extensively, but VIPs including politicians, movie stars, and the military also use helicopters.

However, the Choppers are employed extensively by the media, including weather forecasters, movie producers and businesspeople.

Today, chopper has mostly superseded the word “helicopter” as the official term for the aircraft.

Although it is a helicopter with limited capabilities and a smaller size, the Chopper is extensively employed in corporate, medical, firefighting, police, para-public and oil & gas applications. etc..
